Born in London, Joe Murtagh started drawing since an early age. Inspired by Looney Tune, he usually used to draw characters to please his dad, but this allowed him to specialize in sculpture when he later obtained his Fine Arts degree at Sunderland University. He managed to obtain sculpture commissions after his graduation and started teaching.
